Grovefest 2009 View Comments

GrovefestLast Saturday from 4pm-10pm was Grovefest.  It’s a great South City event located in The Grove (aka Forest Park Southeast) on Manchester Ave. between Sarah and Boyle.  This was my second year going and  I was a little hesitant because of the drizzling rain, but the event was still a lot of fun.  I’ll warn you now, don’t go unless you’re secure in your sexuality and don’t mind if the crowd is 90% gay.  Zack got hit on a lot last year and this year they asked if he was gay because he couldn’t make up his mind (on what to drink).

We showed up at 4pm since Zack had to bartend for Boozin’ it Up for Boxers at 6pm.  It was pretty slow.  Just art tents setting up and the Zombie Squad.  The beer/liquor prices weren’t too high – $4.25 for a Captain and Coke (or flavored vodka) and $5 for a 20oz. Sangria.  We walked around for a bit and decided to come back later when things were in full swing.

Just Johns Drag Show

Later that night, around 9:30pm, people were dancing, drinking, and filtering into the bars along Manchester.  The DJ was pretty good and was playing a lot of dance/top40 mixes with a few odds ones thrown in [listen].  We missed the Clownvis events but we did see a bride and her party decked out in their formal gear!  Last year we went to Novak’s for after hours but this year they were charging a $5 cover [boo!].  That’s fine on normal nights, I know they get busy, but the Grovefest poster said no cover charge for the after party!  So we ended up going to Just Johns because they had a drag show going on.  It was a lot of fun and the drinks were fairly reasonable ($3.75 for my vodka+club) and strong.  They were slammed that night so the service was a little slow but may not be like that every night.

That’s the short and sweet for Grovefest 2009.  I’ll definitely be back next year.

ps – I forgot to add that we very briefly checked out Rehab Lounge and it is very gay.  We saw two men shirtless in leather vests, the bathrooms don’t have doors (the stalls do though, thankfully), and they had an adult version of the claw vending machine [warning: adult content].
